SHIRUSHIZOME HANTEN - CAT / Denkosekka

This work hanten (happi coat) was created in collaboration with a traditional shirushizome dyeing atelier in Kyoto.
Produced using time-honored stencil dyeing techniques supported by modern equipment, the piece preserves the depth and expressive character unique to hand-applied resist dyeing.

The back features a bold cat crest.
The waist is marked with the square-style characters “Denkosekka” (Lightning Speed).
Thunder family crests are placed symmetrically on the chest, completing the dynamic composition.

This work hanten (happi) is crafted from “Juban Tenjiku,” a thick 100% cotton fabric traditionally used for workwear. The more it is worn, the richer its character becomes, allowing the wearer to appreciate its aging process with the same refined sensibility as a pair of well-worn jeans.

Design by Shisamu Iwase (Ukiyoemon)

The design is by Shisamu Iwase, a contemporary ukiyo-e artist known for bridging tradition and modernity.
